Honoring Tradition, Inspiring the Future
Overview
The Bristol Bay Foundation supports education and cultural preservation across the Bristol Bay region, empowering its community through scholarships, programs, and advocacy. They sought a new logo that would reflect their mission while honoring the rich heritage and traditions of the area’s Indigenous peoples.
Challenge
The Foundation needed a visual identity that seamlessly blended cultural symbolism, educational values, and a sense of community. The logo had to resonate deeply with the people it serves while being versatile for use across digital, print, and physical materials.
OUR APPROACH
Research & Discovery
We began by immersing ourselves in the Bristol Bay region’s history, culture, and values. Through conversations with stakeholders and research into local traditions, we identified key themes: light, warmth, knowledge, and connection.
Concept Development
Drawing inspiration from traditional stone oil lamps, or "naniq," we explored designs that embodied the light and guidance the Foundation provides. The naniq became the centerpiece of the logo, representing warmth, hope, and the enduring power of education and culture in the community.
Design Execution
The final logo features a minimalist, stylized naniq, combining clean lines with organic shapes that reflect the balance between tradition and modernity. A warm, earthy color palette was chosen to evoke the natural beauty of Bristol Bay and the grounding presence of its culture.

The naniq symbolizes more than light—it represents the wisdom, resilience, and unity of the Bristol Bay community. Its flame is a beacon of knowledge, culture, and opportunity, while its stone base reflects the strength of Indigenous heritage and traditions.
